Major California Heat Wave, Pacific Northwest Smoke & Tropical Hurricanes [zaXq9UHzNOv]

Extreme heat is building across California and the West Coast late this week, continuing through the weekend and potentially into next week. Heat advisories and excessive heat warnings are likely, with possible record temperatures and several consecutive days of dangerous heat. As temperatures climb, fire danger will ratchet up and air quality may deteriorate. Wildfire smoke is already creating some of the worst air quality on the planet across portions of the Pacific Northwest, with a massive smoke plume extending all the way into the Great Lakes region. We’ll also track the active tropical Pacific. Tropical Storm Foster has weakened, while Genevieve—formerly a powerful Category 5 hurricane—has also dropped in strength, but both systems remain worth watching. Their energy will continue sending swell toward the West Coast, with elevated surf and surf advisories possible along parts of the coastline during the next week.
